For Immediate Release
SELMONT ANNOUNCES 2025 RUN FOR FLORIDA CONGRESSIONAL SEAT WITH $100,000 WAR CHEST. Launches campaign January 3rd.
George “Ges” Selmont, the 2018 Democratic nominee for Congress in Florida’s 4th District announced his 2025 bid for Congress in the seat vacated by Michael Waltz - Florida’s District 6. The districts were re-drawn in 2022 and Selmont owns a home in CD-6. On announcing his campaign Ges Selmont released the following statement:
“I’m running for Congress because our leaders have lost touch with what makes this country great and have put their personal best interests ahead of their constituents,” said Selmont. “ In the past, talented politicians from both sides put forth their best ideas in the House of Representatives. The give and take between Republicans and Democrats makes our country better, it is what our founding fathers envisioned when they gave birth to the greatest nation on Earth. Yet today our leaders engage in pointless culture wars rather than solving problems creatively. We’ve had a Democrat as president for 12 of the last 16 years, so we are just as responsible as the other side for the mess we’re now in. Too many people are one or two paychecks away from financial ruin, In the richest country in the world. In my district critical infrastructure upgrades have been ignored where even a light rain causes our streets to flood, and we have built an economy that works for those at the very top, yet completely leaves behind the middle and working class of this country. That is unacceptable. I’m running for Congress to put the people of this district first and fix the broken politics that have led us into a divisive political standstill that fails to serve the American people.”
A Path to Victory
“The Special Election presents a unique opportunity for a fair fight in a heavily gerrymandered district. All bets are off in a Special Election.” Selmont stated. “It is a one-month sprint to a primary and then a two-month sprint to the Special Election. Special Election voters are “smart shoppers”. They tend to be the most engaged and involved voters and really scrutinize the candidates and their platforms. They will cross party lines to vote for the candidate that best reflects their district and its needs. Being a past congressional candidate in the region and a candidate who actually owns a home in the district gives me the advantage.”
Unlike his opponents who have no connections to the 6th District, Selmont has been a homeowner in Elkton and St Augustine, both of which are located in St Johns County, one of 6 counties wholly or partially contained in Florida’s 6th Congressional District (the others being Flagler, Lake, Marion, Putnam and Volusia). The special election will be the first Congressional race since Kamala Harris’s defeat in November 2024.
Selmont Believes He Can Show Democrats The Way Forward
We have to convince voters that we share the same priorities and mean what we say. Democrats come off as overly polished and focus-grouped. “How many times have you been in conversation in a store and the other person leans in and says “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this but….” In America!?! We’ve created a culture where people are afraid to speak in public. We did that- our side. No matter how well intentioned it was, the effect has been chilling on free speech and extremely damaging to our party. We need to speak openly and honestly with voters. I’m excited for people to come hear me speak and view our web and social content which is launching today.”
First Selmont must face a primary opponent who does not reside in the district, has never held public or appointed office and espouses far left wing and Socialist doctrine on social media. “I respect the First Amendment. Candidates can espouse what they want but should own it, don’t run from it.”
Should Selmont win the primary, his likely Republican opponent would be casino gambling executive Randy Fine who lives outside the district. “He’s a gambling casino executive -I’m sure he’s looking out for your best interests.” Said Selmont. “Randy Fine is a creature of Tallahassee. How’s that working out for you?!?”.
Selmont believes that on the local front, the issues affecting the 6th District are related to land use. “We are using the sale of farmland and open space as an economic engine- and that is shortsighted and wrong. We are planting tract homes instead of crops. Building townhomes instead of resiliency. Rising tides contaminate groundwater and roads that never flooded now flood in afternoon rains. Insurance rates are through the roof (if you can get insurance) and national flood insurance is nearing insolvency. County commissions and local volunteer zoning boards are no match for a steady stream of high-priced out of state developers. We need smart federal solutions to these problems. Homeowners and residents deserve better service from our government, solutions not culture wars. Tallahassee is responsible for this mess. Don’t send Tallahassee to Washington.”
